A Plague Tale: Innocence is the best kind of surprise: an unexpectedly strong historical outing with a likeable cast of characters and unique stealth mechanics. The fantasy underpinnings may not be to everyone’s tastes – especially as the tale somewhat limps to its conclusion – but Asobo Studio’s outstanding use of the PS5 hardware, including the DualSense, make it a must play for fans of story-based adventures.

Better than its predecessor in virtually every way, A Plague Tale: Requiem is a proper sequel that improves its familiar gameplay mechanics and couples them with stunning PS5 visuals and an engaging story. It doesn’t completely rewrite the script, but taking a page from the Naughty Dog playbook, this is a cinematic adventure more than worth your time.

Absolum is both a brilliantly crafted beat-’em-up and a devilishly addictive roguelike. Although the overall experience does feel slightly short-lived, you’ll seriously struggle to tear yourself away from the game’s striking fantasy world — especially when all of its systems start to click.

AI: The Somnium Files tells an often engrossing tale. It takes a couple of hours to really get going, but when it does, it blossoms into one of the most impressively executed visual novels on PS4. FromSoftware took a break from its uber-popular Dark Souls, Elden Ring experiences to return to a series it made before it was popular: Armored Core. This sixth mainline entry is very similar to past iterations — so there may be some whiplash for newer fans — but it remains (almost) just as good. You’ll be in and out of the action, customising your mech with new parts to make sure they perform out on the battlefields of Rubicon. It’s a consistently good experience, but don’t expect it to be quite as memorable as what FromSoftware is now known for.

Ubisoft finally takes the fight to Japan in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Boasting dual protagonists and one of the most detailed, intricate open worlds in the entire series, Shadows is another emotionally charged tale of vengeance. The game pushes stealth-based gameplay much harder than its RPG peers, but doesn’t shy away from crunchy, counter-heavy combat in the process, offering up the best of both worlds when it comes to stab-happy action. An undeniably strong entry in the long-running franchise, capped off with endearing characters and a surprisingly nuanced story.

Building upon the great foundations laid in Astro’s Playroom, Astro Bot is the full-blown 3D platformer the little robot deserves. It’s an explosion of creativity and fun; there is something new to discover in practically every level, and all of it is purpose built to put a smile on your face. Not only is it bursting with imagination, it’s also executed brilliantly. The controls are spot on, every new mechanic and power-up is fun to use, and it’s all presented with incredibly sharp visuals and flawless performance. The icing on the cake is its celebration of PlayStation’s past 30 years, with delightful nods to hundreds of classics. We can’t recommend this highly enough.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora translates James Cameron’s hugely successful movie franchise into an open world action adventure, and it works rather well. Playing in first-person, you explore the gorgeous world of Pandora, realised here in stunning detail. The gameplay is broadly what you’d expect, with simple combat, light crafting, and engaging exploration all working to put you in a Na’vi’s shoes. For fans of the franchise, this is a great interactive iteration.

Left 4 Dead lovers rejoice: it’s back, albeit under a different name. Back 4 Blood is a zombie-popping co-op FPS that tasks a team of four with surviving through numerous missions while fighting back the horde. It’s a grisly post-apocalyptic romp that emphasises teamwork to overcome the sheer number of shufflers inching towards you. A card-based loot and upgrades system means that you can run through the campaign many times and find new equipment to use or tactics to employ. A great time with a few friends, the only ones groaning about this shooter are the zombies themselves.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a role-playing masterclass in almost every aspect that matters. At its best, it’s one of the most deeply engaging RPGs you’ll ever play, and even though its methodical pacing won’t be for everyone, it sets the bar so high in terms of player freedom. Forging your own path to the infamous city of Baldur’s Gate makes for a truly memorable journey, stacked with fantastic characters and superb storytelling. A defining example of its genre.

Ball X Pit is a dangerously addictive roguelite that combines the speedy runs and rapid leveling up of Vampire Survivors with the ball-bouncing action of Breakout. It’s one of those concepts that’ll make you question why a game like it hasn’t been done before, because it works brilliantly. Every element of the game feeds into something else, and the result is this incredibly compelling game that has a surprising amount to see and do.

A remaster compilation featuring seminal PS3 superhero titles Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City, this isn’t the best re-release ever produced. Handled by outsourcing studio Virtuos, the visual improvements are minimal – and, honestly, at times mess with the sombre visual style of the originals. However, the quality of the included games is undeniable – two of the greatest superhero titles of all-time – and thus Batman: Return to Arkham still comes highly recommended, even if it could have ultimately been better.

There have been climbing games before, but Cairn is a really unique example. To scale the huge Mount Kami, you need to control Aava’s limbs individually, looking out for the best holds as you inch upward. On top of the challenging, physics-based mountaineering, you also need to keep on top of her health and hunger, but these survival aspects never feel too overbearing. It’s a nicely balanced game with climbing that feels tangible and realistically tough.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered brings one of the best and most influential first-person shooters to PS4. Though it shows its age somewhat these days, the game’s single-player campaign is still fantastic, with some particularly breathtaking moments still holding up very well. The multiplayer is preserved here, too, and is arguably the best part. Again, it’s been bettered in the years since, but there’s no denying just how much the online functionality of this title changed the landscape. It’s still a lot of fun, and there’s a certain charm to its simplicity.

Anyone who had a Nintendo DS back in the day knows that it boasts a little selection of Castlevania games that are some of the very best in the series — and Castlevania Dominus Collection gives PlayStation loyalists a chance to sample their delights. Featuring Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, Order of Ecclesia, and Haunted Castle, it’s a generous package offering hours of fun exploration, secrets, and boss fights to uncover. With gorgeous pixel graphics, weapon builds to learn, and enemy designs that continually delight, plus some excellent maps to explore and uncover, this is a fantastic little collection that should please any Metroidvania fan.

With a pirate theme introducing nautical traversal and combat, this is a more expansive action RPG that keeps things simple, with that signature illustrated art style and cheeky humour. From the makers of TowerFall Ascension, Celeste is a pure platformer that provides a stern challenge. Using a straightforward set of moves, it does a lot with very little, but it’s not just gameplay where it impresses. Madeline’s climb up Celeste Mountain is both literal and metaphorical as she struggles to overcome her inner demons. Wonderfully pairing a touching story with rock solid platforming, this is one indie adventure that’ll stay with you.

If you’re looking for a breather after those big, violent blockbusters, Chicory: A Colorful Tale is a perfect antidote. This charming indie game will pull you in with its adorable characters and cartoonish aesthetic, but it pairs all that with compelling gameplay and a touching story. You wield a magical brush with which you can paint the environment however you see fit, and you’ll also use colour to solve puzzles and even fight bosses, solo or in co-op. An imaginative and heartfelt game.
